The Sugarbush Racing Club wrapped up its season on Thursday, March 9. Two races were run on the Spring Fling Legends course. Conditions were challenging for the faint of heart as the course was firm and fast.
The first race, named for past club president John Wilson, saw 35 racers take on the firm but edgeable surface. Everyone managed to complete the two runs. Danielle Hampton, Elizabeth Walker and Anne Halvorsen, in that order, led the women racers to the finish line. Caroline O’Grady and Cindy Carr took fourth and fifth places. On the Men’s side, Rick Duckworth and Spaceman Winch continued their season long battle for the top spot. In this race, Duckworth bested Winch by .03 seconds. They were followed by Paul Quinlan, Peter Wicklund and Win Smith.
After a short pause to reset some gates, the second race of the morning was run. Again, Hampton lead the women to the finish, closely followed by Walker and Halvorsen. Cindy Carr and Lauri Landau rounded out the top five. New club member Mary Carol White had a good showing in this race. For the men, Spaceman took his revenge and beat Duckworth by a combined 2.54 seconds. Paul Quinlan repeated his first race third place finish. Dave Seymour and John Lussier slipped into fourth and fifth places.
Following the second race, club members enjoyed a light lunch in the Valley house.
A third race was planned for the day, but the cold and challenging surface took its toll and club officers decided to call it a day and a season.
Later in the afternoon, club members reconvened at the White Horse Inn for the final post race party of the season. Thank you Bob and Allen for welcoming the club to your Inn and your hospitality.
Club members will celebrate the race season at the Inn at the Round Barn on March 23. Race awards will be presented and a raffle to benefit Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sport will round out the club’s winter events.
