Eighty-four members and guests of the Sugarbush Racing Club gathered in and around the Koch home on Common Road on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend to finalize the 2016 season and to really begin the 2017 season in the form of a party! Club President Wheaton Simis greeted everyone and introduced the new club officers, the majority of whom are incumbents.
Deb Koch, the social chairperson for the last eight years, has moved on to other endeavors, but she and her cohorts, Pat Apigian and Kate Jones, have promised to stay on to help new Social Chair, Gordie Hoare, with the transition. Deb instituted many new events for the 140-member club, including dances, wine tastings, golf tournaments and the annual cookout. New chairperson Gordie promised to continue all of the aforementioned events and will try to add more, which delighted the party-loving members to no end! He explained that a lot of the venues for the after-race parties were already in place and that the 2017 kickoff party will be held at the Castlerock Pub at 4:30 on Sunday, December 11.
Racing chairperson, Lauri Landau, reported that the eight dual giant slalom race series will be scheduled as usual for Thursdays beginning in January. Racers of all abilities are welcome and the club hopes to attract many new members, both racers and social members.
President Simis introduced Terry Barbour, the new Sugarbush Ski and Ride School Director, who said he believes racing to be an integral part of the sport of skiing, and he would try his best to accommodate the club in its activities.
John Christiano once again proved his culinary expertise as hot dogs and cheeseburgers were added to the many potluck contributions for a wonderful dining experience. Once again, the weather cooperated, and the Koch home provided a wonderful view of the ski trails soon to be covered in snow!
