SRC Holds John Wilson Memorial Race

Last Thursday dawned cold and clear for the first annual John Wilson Memorial Race. John served the club in many roles and was a significant player in the recent growth of the SRC. John began his term as President of the Sugarbush Racing Club following the annual banquet last March. He passed away in July. His positive influence on the club is missed.

Sugarbush Race Department set a clean, fast course on the Legends arena course on Spring Fling, and 37 racers took advantage of it. Members once again showed how much they love the Legends course with some fine racing. Seventeen members were able to run the course in combined times under a minute, often a challenge on the Racer’s Edge course, but a sweet pleasure on the Legends course.

In the women’s division, Elizabeth Walker once again took first place, with Lauri Landau and Cindy Carr two and five seconds respectively behind to complete the top three. Ann Fender, Renee Epstein and Barbara Tardiff rounded out the women’s group.

In the men’s division, Rick Duckworth retained his first place status, with a four second advantage over the rest of the field. Dave Seymour took second, with Doug Day, Jeff Rubin, John Lussier and Mac Jackson all less than a second behind. Peter Wicklund, Dave Ellison, Mike Ware and Gil Edwards did their usual battling, with Peter coming out on the top of that group this week. Henri Borel tried his best to overtake his traditional rival Stan Needleman, but Stan pushed through to take the lead by less than a second.

Joe Whelan livened up the video with his spectacular crash and burn at the fourth gate, and recovered after some nasty contact between his face and the hard pack snow.

While Mother Nature continues to torture us, we remain optimistic that we will be able to get at least once more race in before calling it a season

On Thursday afternoon the White Horse Inn hosted the club’s apres ski race party attended by 73 members. Allen Zeiner and Bob Heffernan provided a wonderful selection of delicious hors d’oeuvres which were enjoyed by all. The last race party of the season will be held at Chez Henri on Thursday, March 10.

Club members will celebrate the end of the race season at the annual banquet on Tuesday, March 22 at the Inn at the Round Barn.
