Racing Club Nears End Of Season

Ski the East! This winter’s weather and superb snow conditions have afforded the Sugarbush Racing Club to conduct all of its races including this penultimate race in fine style. The dual giant slalom course this past week set by race department rookie Ryan Kinner pleased everyone and held up well under the traffic. The ranks of racers, however, were inexplicably diminished as some of the regulars did not appear

Elizabeth Walker again dominated the women’s division and soundly defeated most of the men racers as well! Lauri Landau was in second place and Cheryl Brayman was third. Paula Baldwin and Caryl Hurwitz were closely matched while Carol Miner showed definite improvement. Racing for the first time this year were Gale Cutchins and Loretta Menkes and their runs belied their lack of experience!

Dave Seymour copped first place in the men’s division followed by Doug Shick who was only seven one hundreths of a second ahead of third place finisher, Philippe Marielle! Brook (without the “e”) Weston and Dave Ellison were virtually tied at fourth and fifth places. Jim Cutchins and Ray Bollerud surged forward in the standings and outgunned Gunnar Sievert and Gil Edwards who were separated by only one one hundreths of a second! Chappy Chapman edged Rich Jones and John Wilson blazed ahead of his usual contemporaries.

New member and first time racer Albert Pierce ran a good race and shows promise to be a contender and Joe Whelan also ran the course for the first time this year. Michael Sharkey tried his new “bargain” racing skis but was not able to overtake his cycling friend, Bob Stevens, ten years his senior! Another octogenarian, Henri Borel, turned in better times than the rest of his gang, Bernie Pistilli and Stan Needleman. President Manny Apigian, Treasurer Dave Koepele and Dennis Brown rounded out the men’s division.

There was no shortage of club members at the Terra Rossa for the apres race party where delicious pizzas were served along with more than a few cocktails! Race chairperson, Lauri Landau, reviewed upcoming events and prizes were raffled including the famous gift basket created by Kate Jones. One more race is scheduled as is the end of the year awards banquet on Tuesday, March 24
