Sugarbush Racing Club Logs Race Three

Race number three of the eight race schedule was held on the Racer’s Edge course in brilliant sunshine and on perfect snow conditions. Race Director and pacesetter Chad Koenig’s course held up well for the forty-six racers who seemed to enjoy its rhythm and creativity.

There was little separation between the top two female finishers, Elizabeth Walker and Danielle Hampton, in their battle for club domination. Lauri Landau placed third again for the third time in a row while Cheryl Brayman was close behind in her first race of the year. Paula Baldwin, Hillary Mooney and Caryl Hurwitz followed as they did in the first two races but Janella Pennington appears ready to break into their circle.

Rick Duckworth took first place in the men’s division in his first race of the year and, in doing so, earned a platinum NASTAR medal for eclipsing the pacesetter’s time in both courses! Bob Kogut placed second in this race and Doug Day came in third. Dave Seymour had an excellent time in one course but was knocked out of contention by hooking a tip on the next run. Brooke Weston apparently had his skis waxed professionally somewhere as he garnered fourth place. It is noteworthy that three of the top four finishers skied the course late from noon to one o’clock!

Doug Shick has traded his tele skis for downhills and he is now a podium contender. Peter Wicklund, Phillipe MarielleDave Ellison and free heeler Mark Haberle barely squeaked by ageless Al Hobart and upstart Dave Gould. Win Smith took a gold medal as he and Gil Edwards nudged Rich Jones who, nevertheless, also received a gold. Mike Sharkey also must have waxed well as he bested Al Carr and Mike Strojny. Gary Salter and newcomer Charlie Baldwin were virtually tied while the octogenarian crowd of Bob Stevens, Bernie Pistilli and Stan Needleman treated their counterpart Henri Borel poorly in his first race of the year. Manny Apigian and Wheaton Simis apparently are another pair closely to be watched.

The apres race party was held at the Hyde Away Inn and members greatly appreciated the superb repast served in the new addition! The gift basket and a gift certificate to the Hyde Away were raffled while the video of the day’s race was shown
