Ski racing club looks forward to the 2015 season

The Sugarbush Racing Club wrapped up their 2014 season and began the 2015 season with a cook out at the home of club president, Manny Apigian.  Over 65 members attended for fun, food and an overview of the upcoming program given by members of the board.  This second annual event was organized by social chairman, Deb Koch, and her committee.  Handling the grill duties was “Super Chef” John Christiano while Pat Apigian was in charge of the weather for the Columbus weekend affair.

The club had a very successful year both on the slopes and with it’s much balleyhooed social program.  Every Thursday during January, February and March racers gather for two runs on a dual NASTAR course on Racer’s Edge trail.  This past winter the club only completed six of eight planned races due to weather but the famous apres race parties were held at various valley establishments regardless.  Racers and club members are able to view videos of the day’s race over refreshments and beverages each week and prizes and raffles are awarded.  Friendly competitions are held in four age groups for men and two for women.  A special class, the “Fast and Furious”, is set up for men and women speedsters.  Prizes and trophies are awarded at the year end banquet held this past year at the Gatehouse Lodge.

There were a number of firsts on the social side this year which is one of the reasons that the club has become one of the valley’s biggest clubs.
There was a “Winter Interlude” dinner dance held over the winter break at the Valley Players and there was a golf outing and dinner in the spring at the White River Golf Club.  Members also journeyed to Norwich University to watch hockey matches.  The social calendar is expected to be full again this year with much of the same events and possibly even more.  Post race parties are being scheduled now.  The club has also supported valley causes during the season including VASS and their 10th Mountain Division program.

This year eight races are planned starting January 9th with at least one being held on the famed Legends Arena on Spring Fling.  Working with the mountain’s Race Department, the club’s race committee chairman, Lauri Landau, is planning to hold race clinics for first timers, women only and advanced racers.  Peter Wicklund’s acclaimed scoring system will determine the status of class competitions.

The club will hold it’s annual kick off and sign up party on December 14th in the Castlerock Pub at 4:30PM.  Anyone interested in joining, especially racers, is invited to attend.
